Briony sets out direct and perform play. Vase scene between Cecilia and Robbie occurs with Briony watching them.
The play fails and the author of the story is revealed to be a 77 year old Briony.
Robbie writes letters and gives Briony the wrong letter to deliver to Cecilia. Cecilie receives and reads the letter.
Briony informs Lola of what she has witnessed. Briony witnesses Cecilia being "attacked" by Robbie. Cecilia and Robbie make love.
Lola is discovered to have cuts and bruises all over her body. The twins disappear and a search party goes out to look for them.
Briony witnesses Lola being nearly raped. Robbie returns with the twins. Briony tells the police about what she has witnessed and she wrongfully accuses Robbie. Robbie is arrested.
Three and a half years go by (WWII started) ... Cecilia has cut ties with her family and she is now a nurse. Briony is a nurse as well and Robbie is a soldier. Robbie gets injured and returns hometo Cecilia.
Briony attends Lola and Paul's wedding. After, she visits Cecilia and Robbie hoping to reconcile with them for her past sins.
Present Day... Briony celebrates her 77th birthday and reaveals that she has been diagnosed with vascular dementia.
Briony finally reveals to the audience that Cecilia and Robbie both died before they had the chance to reunite. She also tells the audeince that she never in fact recconciled with either one of them.
She wishes for her book to be published after she and everyone mentioned in it have past away so that their love will survive.
She comes to the conclusion that nothing will make up for her "crime," but she hopes that by writing the "true story" she will atone a little for her past misdeeds.
