The award-winning novelist was born on June 21st, 1948 in Aldershot, England. He attended the University of Sussex and the University of East Anglia. McEwan currently resides in London, England with his wife Annalena McAfee.  His debut novel called The Cement Garden was first released in 1978. Since then he has received many awards for his two most famous novels, Amsterdam and Atonement. Some of these awards include the Booker Prize for Amsterdam (1998) and his novel, Atonement, received the National Book Critics' Circle Fiction Award (2003), Los Angeles Times Prize for Fiction (2003)as well as the Santiago Prize for the European Novel (2004). 

 

 

Ian Russell McEwan 

Atonement was also developed into a film starring Keira Knightley and James McAvoy as two of the main characters. Since then McEwan has written and published four more novels, which have also earned him some more awards.

 

Interesting Facts:

  • McEwan’s most recent novel, Sweet Tooth, is currently being adapted into a film.

  • McEwan's mother suffered from vascular dementia--the same disease which was diagnosed to his character Briony in Atonement.
